United / Southwest Houston Update
The Council 64 Government Affairs Committee is proud to announce a successful day at “Storming City Hall” on Tuesday, May 8th. Three rooms had to be set up to accommodate the large crowds from United and Southwest. In the morning, both airlines gave a presentation to the joint Transportation & Infrastructure Committee and Budget & Fiscal Affairs. United’s presentation was based on evidence that shifting international traffic between two airports in Houston would not be beneficial for the city. Southwest’s presentation was centered on a talk by CEO Gary Kelly, who is being criticized for initially saying Southwest was going to burden the costs of the expansion. If you have not yet done so, please log-on to keepiahstrong.com to send an e-letter to the Mayor and Council members. AFA-CWA Commends President Obama On Marriage Equality
On May 9th, Veda Shook, International President of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), sent a letter to President Obama commending him for his support of marriage equality. AFA has been a longstanding supporter of equal rights for all, as evidenced in 1976 when the union’s Board of Directors amended its by-laws to include the following objective: “To unite all Flight Cabin Crew members regardless of race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation or nationality.” In addition, in 2006, the AFA Board of Directors unanimously adopted a resolution in support of marriage equality.
AFA is a leading advocate for the Flight Attendant profession and is proud to be part of labor’s decades-long tradition of standing up for fair and equal treatment for all workers. We support marriage equality for our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) sisters and brothers. Marriage equality is not only an economic and social justice issue, but also a human rights issue.
