On July 22, the FAA was partially shutdown because of a Congressional dispute. During that time, almost 100,000 hard working people were laid off and much needed airport infrastructure upgrades were delayed. American taxpayers lost nearly $400 MILLION in revenue that was pocketed by the airline industry. The shut down ended when the U.S. Senate put aside partisan politics and acted to put American’s back to work while the House went on summer vacation. Another shutdown is scheduled to occur all over again when the short-term extension expires on September 16.
At the heart of this shutdown is a provision promoted by Delta Airlines and backed by certain Republicans that attack workers’ democratic rights. The provision isn’t relevant in a bill authorizing funding for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). These lawmakers were shamefully unwilling to negotiate on a clean bill without the undemocratic provision attached.
Call now to tell your member of Congress to take responsible action on a clean FAA funding bill. Call 888-516-5820 to get the Capitol switchboard to transfer you to your Representative. (View a script at the conclusion of this message.)
It is beyond time to finalize a long-term FAA reauthorization bill that improves our work environment, aviation infrastructure, grows our economy, and delivers thousands of new jobs without jeopardizing fair elections for air and rail employees.
Congress must pass a FAA reauthorization bill that is about aviation and not political games! AFA is planning a series of airport leafleting events to educate the public about the pending shut down and the public action needed to avoid it.
This week Flight Attendants will be leafleting at several locations:
– August 23 at Phoenix
– August 25 at Charlotte and Philadelphia
– August 26 at Portland ,OR
If you are in any of these airports on these dates, please stop by to help encourage the public to support a FAA reauthorization bill that does not take away workers’ rights.
If you are unable to attend one of these events, call your member of Congress and urge them to stop playing political games, get to work. Encourage them to pass a bill that keeps Americans working, improves the aviation infrastructure and keeps union representation elections democratic.
Call 888-516-5820 to be connected to the U.S. Capitol switchboard operator who can connect you to your Representative.

(You can also look-up your Representative at (www.house.gov)
Once connected with your Representative’s office tell the staff member who answers the phone that you would like to register an opinion with the Congressman.
“Please tell Representative _________ that as a constituent, I want Congress to stop political posturing and to pass a long-term FAA reauthorization bill that improves our aviation infrastructure, grows our economy, delivers thousands of new jobs and keeps representation elections fair for air and rail employees.”
They may ask for your address or zip code to verify you are a constituent.
