June Flying in EWR Disappointing

Last month, your Union had expressed our members’ concern to the Company regarding the reduction in lines for the Newark domestic base.  We were told that we could expect the regular summer increases for Newark domestic through August, at which time the Fall schedule would cause a significant reduction in flying beginning in September.

It was also explained to us that the number of block hours system-wide had not been reduced, but flying was significantly redistributed from EWR, CLE, and IAH to our new Satellite Bases in ORD, IAD, SFO, DEN, and LAX as a result of the merger.

We understood the concept of the flight redistributions and we welcomed the news about the summer increases coming in June, but the promised increase did not arrive for the EWR base.  While we do recognize that the lines in the base technically and marginally did increase, that number cannot be described as significant.

We also recognize that the Union is not contractually responsible for the construction (quality or quantity) of the lines or the pairings beyond the parameters set forth in the contract (min/max line value, duty day, min rest, min days off, segments after redeyes, etc.)  The displeasure felt by the Flight Attendants regarding the quality and quantity of the lines and pairings is the sole responsibility of the Company and it is a matter that the Company should address.

We understand our members’ frustration and displeasure and we will dutifully take their concerns again to the Company asking for the issues to be satisfactorily addressed.

Memorial Day

Each year, on the last Monday in May, we celebrate and honor those who have bravely fought and died for the freedoms we enjoy today.  Memorial Day is one that is typically spent sharing time with family and friends–it is the gateway to the summer.  We should celebrate in honor of our fallen heroes, for we owe our deepest appreciation for their ultimate sacrifice.

We wish you and yours a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend.

Financial Assistance Available for Tornado Victims

AFA-CWA established our Disaster Relief Fund after September 11, 2001, to aid our members who were placed in harm’s way. AFA members whose primary residence is in a federally declared disaster area, and who have suffered financial loss and/or dislocation, are eligible for $200.00 from the AFA Disaster Relief Fund. It is a gift made possible by the generosity of your fellow union sisters and brothers with AFA.

Attached is the application at http://www.afanet.org, which must be completed to be considered for AFA Disaster Relief Funds. The Fund is currently open to those impacted members whose primary residences are located in the Oklahoma counties of Cleveland, Lincoln, McClain, Oklahoma, or Pottawatomie. If you have any questions about the application process, please call the International EAP office at 1-800-424-2406.

Reminder: Uniform Launch Day is June 25th – Pack Appropriately

June 25, 2013, is the official date we begin wearing our new uniforms. If you are in the middle of a trip, please remember to pack both old and new uniforms. Everyone will be expected to be in their new uniform on launch day, so please do not leave on your trip without your new uniform. Example: If you begin a 4-day trip on June 23, you will need to pack both uniforms and begin wearing your new uniform on June 25, 2013, the official launch of the new uniform.

If you are missing core uniform pieces, please log onto your Cintas account to check the status of your uniform order or call Cintas at 1-800-UNIFORM. The company will be working with Cintas to expedite delivery for those that have pieces on back order. If you placed your core uniform piece order prior to the December 31, 2012, the core uniform ordering deadline, arrangements will be made to ensure you have a complete uniform for June 25. Please keep in mind that optional items that you may have ordered are not guaranteed before Uniform Day, June 25, 2013.

We Have a ‘No Knives’ Senate Bill – Back It Up with Calls

Congress to TSA: No Knives On Planes! 145 members of Congress signed a letter to TSA Administrator Pistole, and Senators from New York and New Jersey (Senators Schumer, Gillibrand, Lautenburg and Menendez) have introduced legislation called the “Keep Knives Out of Our Skies Act.” Now it’s time to call your Senators to generate support for this legislation, which serves as a companion to “The No Knives Act” in the House. Call the offices of your two Senators and say:

“I am a flight attendant and a constituent. I’m calling to make sure knives stay out of the aircraft cabin once and for all. I urge Senator ________ to co-sponsor the “Keep Knives Out of Our Skies Act” that will ensure a permanent ban on knives in the passenger cabin. Thank you.”

Find your Senators: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

That is all for now, fly safe.

In Unity,

Marcus N. Valentino, President
Continental Master Executive Council
